Jennifer McLaren from Edinburgh told a court this week that her boyfriend, Ben Lawless, a 24 year old hairdresser, became “very angry and aggressive” on Christmas Day when he saw a text message from her ex wishing her a Happy Christmas on her phone.
Lawless “accused her of cheating and messaging her ex-partner’ before calling her on FaceTime, when he threatened to set the vehicle on fire”, reports the Metro.
On St. Stephens Day 2020, one of Lawless neighbours saw him lean into the £16,000 Polo which was parked outside his home in the Leith area, and set the front seat ablaze. The car was subsequently destroyed in the blaze.
Lawless handed himself into police the following day, December 27. He pleaded guilty to wilfully setting fire to the car and will be sentenced next month.
It is not known if the couple are still in a relationship.
