BREAKING: 23-yr-old Abdullah Khan charged over attacking garda in Dublin city centre on Tuesday evening

A 23-yr-old man has appeared before the court in relation to an incident that occurred in Dublin city centre on Tuesday, during which a garda was stabbed while on duty, reports RTE.

The injured officer, a probationer, had been on a high-visibility patrol alongside a colleague when the incident occurred.

He received treatment at a hospital for his injuries and was later discharged on Tuesday night, reports RTE.

Abdullah Khan, whose residential details are being withheld by court order, is facing two criminal charges.

He stands accused of assault causing harm to a garda on Capel Street on 29 July, as well as of possessing a knife capable of inflicting serious injury, reports RTE.

The second allegation falls under the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.

Mr Khan was brought before Dublin District Court by detectives attached to the Bridewell Garda Station, reports RTE.

Detective Sergeant Liam McLaughlin gave sworn testimony regarding the arrest, charges, and caution.

He stated that Mr Khan was arrested at 11.04pm last night, and when formally charged around 45 minutes later by Sergeant Emmet Brannigan at Bridewell Garda Station, “Mr Khan made no reply after caution,” reports RTE.

Detective Sergeant McLaughlin informed the court that bail would be opposed, while defence solicitor Colleen Gildernew confirmed they were not seeking bail at this time.

Judge Treasa Kelly instructed that gardaí be given 24 hours’ notice ahead of any bail application, reports RTE.

Ms Gildernew requested that Mr Khan receive medical care while in custody and asked for restrictions on publishing his address due to safety concerns. She also noted she would submit a statement of means next week.

The judge ordered that Mr Khan’s address remain confidential, granted him free legal aid, and remanded him in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court next Wednesday, reports RTE.
