BREAKING: “A potential disaster for Christmas” – Another bird flu outbreak discovered in Co Monaghan

A third outbreak of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, has been confirmed on a commercial turkey farm in less than a week.

The latest incident involves a flock near Clontibret, Co Monaghan, close to the border with Northern Ireland.

The farm is a large-scale operation with thousands of turkeys, all of which will now be culled.

A 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone have been established around the site.

The location is raising particular concerns for authorities, due to the high density of poultry farms in the border areas of Cavan and Monaghan.

This follows two outbreaks last week on commercial turkey farms: one in Carlow on Tuesday, and another near Kells, Co Meath, on Wednesday.

A nationwide housing order for all poultry and captive birds came into effect today amid the elevated virus risk.

A similar requirement has been in place in Northern Ireland since Thursday.
