BREAKING: DKIT achieves University College Status and will become Dundalk University College in historic cross-border partnership

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) is set to become Dundalk University College through a ground-breaking partnership with Queen’s University Belfast, approved by both institutions’ governing bodies and the Irish Cabinet on 19 November 2025.

This first all-island initiative allows DKIT to transition to university-level status while retaining autonomy in finance, staffing, and governance.

A formal agreement will be signed in December, with the new university college fully operational by the 2026 academic year.

Students enrolling from September 2026 will graduate with Queen’s degrees.

Minister James Lawless hailed it as a landmark for higher education, boosting the Dublin-Belfast corridor’s research, innovation, and economic growth.
