Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly has withdrawn his candidacy for the 2025 Irish presidential election, clearing the path for former minister Heather Humphreys to secure the party’s nomination. Kelly, a Kerry native and former GAA president, initially sought the nomination after Mairead McGuinness stepped down due to health concerns.
However, with Humphreys gaining overwhelming support from the Fine Gael parliamentary party, amassing over 40 backers compared to Kelly’s 12, he announced his withdrawal, citing the need for party unity. Humphreys, a former Cavan-Monaghan TD and long-serving cabinet minister, is now poised to represent Fine Gael in the presidential race, expected by late October 2025. Her campaign emphasizes unity and representing a modern, outward-looking Ireland.
