Maduro, 63, and his wife Cilia Flores were transferred under heavy guard from a Brooklyn detention centre to the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse. They face a four-count indictment alleging a 25-year conspiracy to flood the US with cocaine, involving partnerships with groups like the Sinaloa Cartel and Tren de Aragua, alongside weapons offences.
The charges stem from a 2020 indictment unsealed during Trump’s first term, now superseding with additional allegations. Maduro is accused of leading the “Cartel de los Soles” to enrich himself through drug trafficking.
