BREAKING: It’s official – today was the hottest day in May in Ireland’s history with a record 28.6c

A temperature of 28.6°C has been recorded in County Clare, breaking Ireland’s May record.

Met Éireann confirmed the figure was reached at Shannon Airport this afternoon.

The previous record of 28.4°C was set at Ardfert in County Kerry on 31 May 1997. A temperature of 28.4°C was also recorded today at Oak Park in County Carlow.

Forecaster Gerry Murphy said today was a very hot day across the country, with temperatures well into the 20s nearly everywhere. He confirmed that 28.6°C at Shannon Airport in County Clare breaks the previous national May record of 28.4°C, which had stood since 1997 when it was recorded in Ardfert, County Kerry. This marks a new national record for the month of May at Shannon Airport.
