BREAKING: Multiple school closures now looks likely tomorrow as the Department of Education issues a statement

There may be some school closures tomorrow (Friday) as forecasters say weather conditions are likely to get worse overnight with snowfall and subzero temperatures expected in many areas.

Although the Department of Education has not officially closed all public schools, a spokesperson for the Department has warned that closures may be likely due to adverse weather conditions.

The Department of Education say management at schools across the country have been given permission to close as long as it is in the interest of child safety.

They also say any decision will be made at the discretion of the school and all schools nationwide should continue to monitor weather forecasts.

The decision comes as Met Eireann extended its yellow status snow and ice warning until Sunday.

Met Éireann say more snowfall is expected on Thursday night and early Friday, whilst temperatures are expected to drop as low as -7C in some parts.
