Powerful winds are expected to sweep across Ireland this weekend with the approach of Storm Dave, as Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow wind alert covering the whole country.

The national forecaster stated that very strong southerly winds are anticipated, shifting to a westerly direction by Saturday evening, accompanied by intense gusts and gales along coastal areas, reports RTE.

The warning is scheduled to come into force at 3pm on Saturday and remain active until midnight on Sunday.

According to officials, the storm may result in fallen trees and branches, waves spilling over coastal defenses, hazardous travel conditions, and debris or unsecured items being blown around, reports RTE.

Met Éireann’s senior forecaster Gerry Murphy noted that rainfall is currently moving across Ireland, with further showers expected tomorrow.

“But on Saturday, this deepening Atlantic depression will move up close to the west coast of Ireland and the north-west, and will then move on over Scotland,” he said, reports RTE.

During an interview on RTÉ’s News at One, he explained that the Status Yellow alert relates to the strong winds linked to Storm Dave.

Mr Murphy indicated that the “greatest possibility” of the warning being escalated would be in Donegal “where the storm depression will track closest to”, reports RTE.

He added that, alongside the windy conditions, Saturday is expected to be wet, with the heaviest rainfall affecting western and northwestern regions.

“Currently amounts don’t look like requiring rainfall warnings but that may change,” he said, reports RTE.

He also highlighted another “potential impact” from Storm Dave that the public should be “very aware” of:

“There will be high waves and possible wave overtopping, especially at high tide on Saturday afternoon, reports RTE.

“And that’s on many of the coasts, especially the south, the west and the northwest coasts,” he said, reports RTE.

Mr Murphy mentioned that a “brighter day” is expected on Easter Sunday, bringing a combination of sunshine and scattered showers, reports RTE.

The UK Met Office has likewise issued a Yellow wind alert for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, and Derry, valid from 2pm Saturday until 2am Sunday, reports RTE.

It added that the storm is likely to bring a period of very strong winds from Saturday into early Easter Sunday, potentially leading to some damage and disruption to travel.

Storm Dave will mark the fourth named storm of the season, selected from a list of 21 names compiled by the Irish, UK, and Dutch meteorological services, reports RTE.
