Theresa May has made a dramatic announcement today after three previous failed Brexit deals.
The newest Brexit deal will be brought to the table in early June in May’s one last ditch effort. Speaking this afternoon, Theresa May claimed that the new bill has major changes to it which should allow more support from Labour MPs than it has achieved previously.
The takeaway point is that there would be a vote on a second referendum.
‘I recognise the genuine and sincere strength of feeling across the House on this important issue,’ May said. ‘The government will therefore include in the Withdrawal Agreement Bill at introduction a requirement to vote on whether to hold a second referendum.’ ‘So to those MPs who want a second referendum to confirm the deal – you need a deal and therefore Withdrawal Agreement Bill to make it happen,’ Theresa May said.
May said: ‘I believe there is now one last chance. Today I’m making a serious offer to MPs across parliament: a new Brexit deal.’ She said the ‘reality’ was we would not leave the EU as planned unless she could get cross-party support.
If this latest effort doesn’t pass, May will almost have to quite with Boris Johnson already putting himself in the running for the next leadership bid.
