President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he has canceled a planned trip by senior envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Islamabad, Pakistan, for indirect peace negotiations with Iran.
The move comes amid stalled efforts to broker a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Trump cited Iran’s unclear position and internal “infighting” within Tehran’s leadership as reasons for the cancellation, stating there was no point in sending representatives on a long journey.
“I just cancelled the trip of my representatives going to Islamabad, Pakistan, to meet with the Iranians,” Trump posted on Truth Social. He added that Iran could call the U.S. directly if serious about talks, describing further travel as unnecessary.
The envoys had been expected to engage with Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in Pakistan-mediated discussions aimed at breaking a diplomatic deadlock. However, Araghchi departed Islamabad without a direct meeting, signaling limited progress.
The cancellation represents a setback to recent momentum for de-escalation. Trump emphasized that the decision does not signal an immediate resumption of hostilities but reflects frustration with the current Iranian stance. Observers note the development highlights deep challenges in achieving a breakthrough in the two-month conflict.
