Ireland’s elderly are being abandoned in plain sight as 2026 begins. CSO SILC data for 2025 shows 19.8% of people aged 65+ at risk of poverty or social exclusion—up from 16.1% in 2023—making Ireland one of the worst performers in Western Europe for senior poverty.

The twin hammers of energy and food inflation are crushing fixed incomes. Winter 2025–2026 saw average household electricity bills hit €1,729 annually with no government credits reinstated, while home heating oil prices remain elevated despite the carbon tax pause for kerosene. Grocery inflation averaged 4% across 2025, with staples like bread, milk, and meat rising faster—pushing weekly shopping bills for a single pensioner up €30–€40 year-on-year.

The State Pension (€277.30 weekly from January 2026) lags far behind living costs. Fuel Allowance (€33 weekly for 28 weeks) covers only a fraction of heating needs in poorly insulated homes. Thousands of seniors skip meals, turn off radiators, or delay medical care to make ends meet.

X is full of heartbreaking accounts: elderly neighbours rationing food, choosing between heat and medicine. Charities report record demand for food parcels among over-65s.

This is not dignity in old age—it’s systemic neglect. Demand a meaningful pension increase, permanent winter energy supports, and VAT removal on essentials for pensioners. Ireland’s seniors built this nation; they deserve to live in it with security, not fear.
