Brendan O’Connor: The government won’t help my Down Syndrome daughter

RTÉ star Brendan O’Connor has revealed that the government will not provide assistance for his disabled daughter, even though the two-year-old nearly died last year. Mary has Down Syndrome.

The talk show host has hit out at the government because it will not provide any assistance to him and his wife. Children with Down Syndrome do not automatically qualify for extra help, even though children with physical disabilities and autism do.

Mary almost choked to death last year but was saved by a paramedic who was in the room. O’Connor expressed his dismay that his daughter does not receive resource teaching hours because her condition is classed as ‘mild’.
