Brexit stalemate as Boris Johnson rejects meeting EU leaders until they drop backstop

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he will not even meet with EU leaders until they drop the Irish backstop from Brexit negotiations.

The new Prime Minister turned down invitations to talks from German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron and a spokesman for the PM said that there is no point in face to face meetings unless they commit to abandon demands for the Irish backstop.

While PM Johnson has said he is determined to reach a new deal with EU on the UK’s departure from the bloc, EU leaders have out right rejected any possibility of renegotiating the agreement that was signed up to by Prime Minister Teresa May.

Meanwhile the British government has stepped up preparations for a no-deal exit from the EU and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has also voiced his determination that the backstop remains lest his government be forced by the EU to enforce a hard border on the island of Ireland.
