Brothers who were arrested over alleged Christmas Day brawl that saw tractor hijacked and man ‘battered with vodka bottle’




Two brothers, one of whom allegedly used a bottle of vodka in an alleged assault, were jailed when they appeared before Judge John Cheatle in a special session of Gorey District Court Wednesday afternoon.

Judge Cheatle heard that brothers Colin Murphy and Glen Murphy, both residents of Kyleshal, Raheendoran, Carlow, were reportedly involved in a series of accidents on Christmas Eve.

Accoring to the Mirror, Colin Murphy and Glen Murphy were charged with assaulting William Delaney causing damage in breach of Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offenses Against the Person Act 1997, on 25 December at Ballygurteen, Paulstown, Co. Kilkenny.

Furthermore, they were accused of assaulting Martin Doyle on the same date in Ballygurteen and causing him harm. They were also accused of using a mechanically propelled vehicle in Clogrennane, County Carlow on 22 December without the consent of owner Finian Brett.

They were also charged on 25 December with causing damage to the rear window, side window and rear view mirror of a motor vehicle, belonging to Fiona Donnelly in Ballygarten, and with damaging two telecommunications poles worth €1000 belonging to Eir on the same date and place, reports the Mirror.

They were also accused of wrecking a motor vehicle owned by Martin Doyle on the same date and location.

In the course of an alleged assault on William Delaney, Glen Murphy was also accused of producing an object capable of inflicting serious injury, a bottle of Glass Gray Goose vodka, on December 25 at Ballygarten, reports the Mirror.

Sergeant Matthew Bhylan and Garda Timothy Tyghe gave evidence of the arrest and charge of caution.

According to the Mirror, they told the court that when the charges were filed, none of the defendants responded with Judge Cheatle sent both defendants to Cloverhill Prison to reappear before Kilkenny District Court on 3 January.
