The acting Tanaiste and Labour party leader is feeling pretty good about herself recently after latest figures have shown that her department of Social Protection have saved €464m in welfare expenditure.

The mammoth savings for the year ending 2015 were largely achieved through the prevention of fraud and error, whilst a further €83 million in overpayments were also recovered.

Speaking about the somewhat staggering savings Ms Burton told reporters that it was her department’s objective “to ensure that it pays the right amount of money to the right person at the right time”.

“I have always championed the welfare system as a safety net for those who need it most. It’s precisely why over the past number of years I have put in place measures to tackle fraud and abuse in the system, so that resources are there for people genuinely in need.”

Meanwhile the department hopes to make further strides this year by cutting unnecessary expenditures even further by having stricter guidelines and less of an overspend.
