“But it’s ok to slag off nuns?!” – Mixed reaction to Tommy Tiernan apologising over “racist joke” that offended RTE presenter as Taxi firm Free Now ends huge sponsorship deal as a result

Some social media users are saying that there’s double standards being played out across mainstream media after the outrage of Tommy Tiernan slagging off taxi drivers and nuns in the same show.

Tiernan’s joke hasn’t been publicised but The Liberal has learned of it and let’s just say it was a stupid and unfunny throwaway remark. Never mind the age of political correctness, it actually wasn’t even funny at all. He just did his usual roaring laughing as he said it to try and enhance it.

Either way, people are saying why was it fine to make a comparison about a penguin looking like a nun with Rosary Beads. Why wasn’t there uproar from Catholics? Why didn’t anyone storm out and get offended at it?

People are saying that there’s far too much political correctness these days and that Tiernan is a complete sell out over the whole debacle.

Taxi booking service Free Now has ended its sponsorship of the Tommy Tiernan Show on RTÉ, saying it was “disappointed about the comments made at his Vicar Street gig regarding taxi drivers”, reports RTE.

The company said it works closely with taxi drivers across the country to provide an essential transportation service for passengers across Ireland.

“Prejudice of any kind towards taxi drivers is unacceptable,” it said, reports RTE.

It decided last week to end its sponsorship of the show but “will continue to work with RTÉ on other projects going forward”.

Earlier this week, RTÉ presenter Emer O’Neill said the comedian and talk show host called her to apologize for a joke he made at a recent comedy gig he was attending in Vicar Street in Dublin.

The former Home School Hub host quit Mr. Tiernan’s silly show earlier this month after making a joke that offended her during his stand-up set.

Mr. Tiernan has since apologized and removed the joke from the show.

In a statement, RTÉ confirmed that Free Now has decided not to continue its sponsorship of the Tommy Tiernan Show on RTÉ One.

“We look forward to working with Free Now again in the future,” the statement added, reports RTE.
