Calls to change law to force repeat offenders to pay back free legal aid

Noel Grealish, an Independent TD, has proposed a change in the law that would require repeat offenders to reimburse the cost of their legal aid.

He suggests that those employed should have their wages reduced, and the same should apply to those on Social Protection payments.

“Hit them where it hurts… they are making a mockery of the law,” he said, reports RTE.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar acknowledges that this is an issue that frustrates people, but he also highlights the principle of innocence until proven guilty.

While he thinks that recouping costs from those found guilty is worth exploring, he emphasizes that it should not be assumed that someone found guilty before is guilty again, reports RTE.
