Cecil the lion: Zimbabwe’s justice system wants the dentist to face trial

The American dentist who paid for an illegal hunt and killed the lion known as Cecil was a “foreign poacher” and now, Zimbabwe’s authorities are looking to have him extradited, so he can face justice in the country where the crime was committed.

Zimbabwe’s Environment Minister, Oppah Muchinguri, said that the Prosecutor General had initiated the process to have him extradited from the United States. The minister, who described Cecil as an “iconic tradition”, emphasized the fact that the killing was deliberate and he hopes that an extradition will make him accountable for his action.

Walter Palmer, the dentist, stated that he believed that the hunting permits were in order.

Zimbabwe’s Embassy in the United States was not aware of the extradition proceedings were initiated today, however, they are taking the case very seriously. Two Zimbabwean men face proceedings for helping Palmer. Another one was charged on Wednesday with failing to prevent Palmer from unlawfully killing Cecil.

The US Justice Department doesn’t comment on extradition requests, however, the White House said yesterday that it would review a petition with over 100.000 signatures demanding extradition.

The illegal killing of a lion in Zimbabwe is punished by up to 10 years in prison and a mandatory fine of $20,000.
