Changes to alcohol pricing could lead to additional problems for addicts

This week saw the introduction of minimum alcohol pricing, pushing prices up across the republic of Ireland. The price increases could have unintended consequences.

According to the Irish Examiner, Mike Guerin, who is a senior addiction counsellor with Cuan Mhuire in Bruree, Co Limerick, said;

“There are people who are chemically dependent who are abusing more than one thing so obviously if the price of alcohol goes up significantly, it will probably result in those people relying more on the other
substances that they are abusing rather than alcohol.”

He made the point that alcohol addicts could end up in a situation where they would be relying less on the alcohol and more on the illicit substance.

It is also thought that the price increases could pave the way for the manufacture of homebrew as they will affect the purchase of cheap alcohol.
