The health products regulator has determined that some young children have been given adult doses of a Covid vaccine.

According to Breaking News and the Irish Examiner, this mistake was realised when the children went for their second dose of the vaccine.  The correct dose of Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for a child is 10mg while an adult should be given 30mg.

One of the children had a mild adverse effect after they were given the adult dosage. The adult dose of the vaccine is said to have a purple cap on its vial, while the dose for children aged 5 to 11 has an orange cap.

It is reported that the HSE’s National Immunisation Office (NIO) has asked for all staff administering vaccines to be reminded of the difference. They have even had to issue a reminder of which colour cap is for children and which colour is for adults.
