Children’s Health Ireland has refuted assertions made by Sinn Féin in the Dáil that 800 child chemotherapy appointments were cancelled in the previous year, asserting that no chemotherapy treatment cancellations occurred, reports RTE.
800 chemotherapy appointments for children were among the quarter of a million hospital appointments that were cancelled last year, according to information presented by Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald to the Dáil earlier today.
A CHI representative did, however, state today that most delays or deferrals are caused by patient-specific factors and are founded on clinical judgements on the patient’s state of health at the time, reports RTE.
It also said that there are a variety of clinical reasons why patients might need to reschedule, including blood work suggesting a delay in therapy or a patient’s illness making treatment impossible.
