No one is paying it: TV licence inspector job ‘almost impossible’ in last year, RTE reports

The Communications Workers’ Union General Secretary has stated that over the past year, the work of TV licence inspectors has been harder, reports RTE.

According to Seán McDonagh, their problems have been made worse by the events that occurred at RTÉ and the ongoing political rumours.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Mr. McDonagh claimed that the government and succeeding ministers had failed to address the issue, and that the TV licence model was no longer appropriate.

He emphasised that the structure in place today was implemented in the early 1980s and that any modifications made in the future must make sure the business is not “carrying the can” for the failures of earlier administrations.

“It hasn’t been updated, the legislation, in terms of making collections,” he said, reports RTE.

“The contract has not been updated and at times An Post itself has had to sponsor and pay some money towards implementing the contract. That is no longer fit-for-purpose. Events at RTÉ made that worse, and the job of the inspector is almost impossible,” he added, reports RTE.
