Martin has been told the government plan for affordable housing is not working’

More affordable housing is being provided, according to Tánaiste Micheál Martin’s housing strategy, reports Breaking News.

Although there had been some improvement, he claimed that the “fundamental” problem remained the fact that there was still a shortage of available homes.

During Thursday’s Leaders’ Questions, Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns accused him of providing “spin” on the availability of affordable homes, reports Breaking News.

Despite the delivery of 966 cost-rental and 499 cheap purchase houses last year, she lambasted the government for not meeting its objectives for affordable housing.

“That’s fewer than 1,500 affordable homes when the target was 5,500,” she said, reports Breaking News.

“Ultimately, even though we’ve delivered 100,000 homes since 2020, it’s not enough. Demand is higher than supply, which is leading to a fundamental issue leading to price increases, and huge challenges for people,” Mr Martin said, reports Breaking News.
