The city of Minneapolis has been sentenced to pay $27m to the family of George Floyd following his death while in police custody in 2020.
The settlement is the outcome of a civil suit brought forward by his family, who stated that Mr. Floyd’s death occurred amidst a culture of ‘impunity, excessive force, and racism’ in the city’s police force.
Former police officer Derek Chauvin stands accused of Mr. Floyd’s death. Mr. Chauvin’s trial will begin this coming week.
