Claw hammer man chased niece into Dublin cafe and attacked her after having nightmare about her, court hears

A court has heard that a man had a nightmare about his niece, so he pursued her with a claw hammer, took her into a café, and hit her skull on a metal counter, reports The Mirror.

According to testimony given at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, Thomas Lawrence, 62, went to his niece’s house early on a Saturday morning in August 2020 and began yelling obscenities at her and her spouse.

He left the premises with a claw hammer and pursued his niece down the road as the woman and her husband walked around to her uncle’s flat to find out what was going on, reports The Mirror.

A horrified patron attempted to stop Lawrence when she walked into a nearby café and begged the barista to contact the gardaí.

Lawrence then entered, grabbed her by the hair, struck her in the head, and repeatedly slammed it off a metal counter. Not long after, he was taken into custody, reports The Mirror.

August 29, 2020, at the same site, Lawrence, of James Street, Dublin 8, entered a guilty plea to one count of assault causing harm to his niece.

On October 18, 2014, he entered a guilty plea to one count of attempting to steal three bottles of wine from Spar on Dame Street, reports The Mirror.
