O’Gorman’s plan to accept up to 2,600 more migrants over four years

As part of a resettlement initiative, the State will take in up to 2,600 refugees from Jordan and Lebanon throughout the course of the following four years, reports Irish Examiner.

Additionally, the government wants to set up permanent integration teams in each local authority to organise services and assistance for newly arrived immigrants.

With 650 refugees anticipated to arrive in Ireland this year as a result of the programme, Integration Minister Roderic O’Gorman is scheduled to present a letter to Cabinet as early as Tuesday, asking for approval for the 2024–2027 phase of the Irish Refugee Protection Programme, reports Irish Examiner.

Established in 2015, the plan will primarily witness the arrival of Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon in 2024 and 2025.

According to the document, there are “particular challenges” in providing for the housing requirements of migrants because the environment has changed since the scheme’s last phase, which ran from 2020 to 2023.

As a result of Mr. O’Gorman’s plan, local governments will have to supply a total of 100–120 homes annually, reports Irish Examiner.
