Coalition split about upcoming election date

In yet another example of the deep rift that exists between the Coalition partners, both parties are at loggerheads over the actual date for the election.

Fine Gael favours Thursday, February 25, for the somewhat incredible reason that there is a rugby match on the next day. Labour prefers February Friday 26, so that younger voters who are attending colleges and universities will have a chance to go home and vote for them.

Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly in fact has said that he’ll only sign off on the election date “as long as it’s on Friday 26th.”

With Labour likely to become a thing of the past in a short few weeks, they will bitterly clutch at any straws in order to squeeze in as many votes as possible.
