Cold Snap Ahead: Temperatures set to plummet over the coming days with severe frost and snow showers expected in most places

The state’s national forecaster has warned motorists to be extra careful this week as temperatures are expected to dramatically drop across the country over the coming days.

Met Eireann say the majority of the country will experience servere frost, ice and even snow showers in the coming days. They have also warned that black ice will be in many areas. Meanwhile the Gardai and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) have echoed Met Eireann’s warning by telling motorists to exercise extreme caution when driving – particularly along inland areas and on higher ground.

Temperatures are expected to sink to as low as -3C, with some areas also experiencing snow showers. However, while snow and sleet will turn to heavy rain showers in some western areas, it will generally be dry, bright but extremely cold for most parts.

The national forecaster says that it will remain bitterly cold into next week with milder conditions not expected to return until Monday.
