In front of 25,000, Richie Towell’s unbelievable season ended on a high tonight as the midfielder managed to grab an extra-time winner to give Dundalk victory over Cork City in this afternoon’s FAI Cup final at the Aviva Stadium.

After 90 minutes, the game suddenly came alive in two ferocious minutes into the second period of extra-time as Towell blasted the ball past City keeper Mark McNulty, following some control wizardry from Daryl Horgan.

Towell’s goal was enough to give Dundalk a league and cup double, their first since 1988.

One supporter said:
“I can’t believe it, the town will be celebrating for a week!”
