A luxury boutique hotel will be developed above Dublin’s iconic Bewley’s café.

The Sunday Independent has reported that Property developer Johnny Ronan has begun planning to build a 70-bed hotel in the building on Grafton Street. The development is part of a number of projects by Ronan Group Real Estate estimated to cost €250m.

Bewley’s café opened in 1927 and shut in February for renovations which will reduce its floor space. The café was losing an estimated €1.2m a year, 140 staff were made redundant as a result.

It has been warned that Dublin hotel prices will continue to rise, if availability remains an issue. An estimated 3,000 more rooms are required to meet demand.
