Convicted child killer Robert Black dies in prison aged 68

It has been confirmed late last night that child killer Robert Black has died in prison in Northern Ireland.

Police say Black’s death at Maghaberry high security jail in Co Antrim is not being treated as suspicious. Black aged 68 from Falkirk was serving a number of life sentences for the brutal murders of four young schoolgirls in the 1980s. A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Prison Service said: “The Prison Service has confirmed that a 68-year-old prisoner has died at Maghaberry Prison.” “While this is not being treated as suspicious, the Prison Service has informed the PSNI, Coroner, and Prisoner Ombudsman. It would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”

Black was sentenced to 25 years back in prison December 2011 for the brutal murder of nine-year-old Jennifer Cardy from Ballinderry, Co Antrim, whose body was found six days after she disappeared on her way to a friend’s house in 1981, he was also charged with the murders of three other young girls in the 1980s, which include 11-year-old Susan Maxwell, from the Scottish Borders; five-year-old Caroline Hogg, from Edinburgh; and Sarah Harper, 10, from Morley, near Leeds.
