Ever since making some unwise remarks via her Facebook page, Cork councillor Laura McGonigle has been the target of death threats, offensive comments about her appearance, and other forms of abuse.

Referring to protesters marching during the weekend, Ms. McGonigle said that ‘(people marching) should collect rainwater and drink it for a week.’

Despite saying that what she meant was that rainwater is unsafe to drink and that it costs the State €1.2bn to make it drinkable, and also issuing an apology, the councillor has been faced with even more abuse.

Speaking since making the original remarks, she has said that ‘I never intended to upset anyone, and if anyone feels insulted, I am incredibly sorry.’

There are calls now for her to step down from her position.
