Denmark, Poland and the Czech Republic are to close their borders in response to the coronavirus threat as nations risk economic damage and political tensions in their fight against the spread of the pandemic across Europe.
The drastic measures taken by the three countries have intensified the uprising of other EU member states against Brussels’ warnings that are so far avoiding blanket travel bans and coordinate immediate measures.
The ban, with very limited exceptions, is equivalent to what Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, suggested by asking Member States on Friday to take an appropriate and cooperative approach and push for a blanket travel ban across Europe.
