Local authorities in the Italian city of Bergamo have confirmed that the city’s crematorium -the only such facility in the province- is no longer able to cope with the steady influx of dead bodies. As a result, dozens of coffins are now being transported elsewhere inside army trucks.
The facility can cremate up to 25 bodies in a 24h period, but the severe mortality of the coronavirus outbreak in the region has meant that the crematorium can no longer cope.
The sheer amount of coffins have already filled two hospital mortuaries and a cemetery morgue.
Bergamo has officially reported almost 4,000 cases of coronavirus, with 1,640 deaths so far.
