Coronavirus: Virus has mutated into more than 30 strains, casting doubt on the discovery of an effective vaccine

The Covid-19 virus has mutated into more than 30 different strains since the outbreak began in China late last year, scientists have warned.

The organism’s high mutability means that developing an effective vaccine might prove to be either very difficult or not cost-effective, as different strains might respond to different vaccines.

This high variation might also partly explain why the disease has caused far higher mortality in some regions of the world than others. Analysis of cell samples showed that the most aggressive strains caused a viral load up to 270 times higher than the least harmful pathogens.

Typically, a higher viral load in human cells carries an increased probability of death of the host body.
