‘Corrupt Ukrainian officials stole $40 million which was meant to buy arms for war with Russia’

According to Ukraine’s security service, employees from an arms firm in Ukraine colluded with officials from the defence ministry to misappropriate approximately $40 million (€36 million) allocated for the purchase of 100,000 mortar shells to be used in the war with Russia, reports Breaking News.

The SBU announced on Saturday that five individuals have been charged and one has been detained while attempting to cross the Ukrainian border.

If found guilty, the accused could face up to 12 years in prison.

Kyiv is currently attempting to crack down on corruption to expedite its membership in the European Union and NATO reports Breaking News.

Both organizations have demanded significant anti-corruption efforts before Kyiv can join.

Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, was elected in 2019 on an anti-corruption platform, well before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, reports Breaking News.
