Scientists today are raising the alarm that the Brazilian P1 coronavirus variant might spread quicker and escape the human immune system.
Initial research seems to support the theory that P1 spreads faster than previous strains found in Brazil, but the major concern is that the strain might be able to effectively ‘bypass’ human immunity built against previous variants. P1 has been linked to increased mortality in Brazil, but it’s unclear whether this was because of the viral strain itself, or because of inadequate medical care.
No fewer than six P1 cases have already been identified in the UK.
