Cuts to bus routes required to save the business, according to Bus Eireann chief

Bus Éireann chief executive Martin Nolan informed the Oireachtas Transport Committee today that unless cuts and adjustments to routes are made, the Expressway service will go out of business altogether.

These comments follow the announcement from Bus Eireann that it’s cutting or severely reducing some rural services to some towns and villages in the south and south east.

Mr Nolan said that the situation “does require change”.

He added “As a company, if we do not make changes required by customers, Expressway will go out of business and jobs will be lost, both within Bus Éireann, and the wide range of suppliers that depend on Bus Éireann across the country,”

“We cannot trade recklessly. Expressway has to make a commercial return on its expressway routes to enable fleet replacement to take place, as it does not receive any funding for buses or coaches on these routes.”
