Gardaí report that a peaceful demonstration is still going on at a location in County Wicklow where accommodations for applicants for international protection are being made, reports RTE.

The Garda Public Order Unit has left the area where it was yesterday.

The demonstrators expressed a desire for the situation to remain calm, but they believe their worries regarding the legitimacy of the actions taken, the effects on the environment, and the resources available to migrants are not being taken into consideration.

Because construction workers were being blocked from working at the site, the Public Order Unit was called in yesterday, according to the policeí. Members of the police unit are specifically trained in peaceful crowd control, reports RTE.

A man was detained on suspicion of hurling a pallet at a garda during an attempt to blockade the lane leading to River Lodge.

He was freed without being charged, and the Director of Public Prosecutions will receive a case, reports RTE.

According to Garda Headquarters, the Public Order Unit did not use excessive force and instead policed the scene yesterday while wearing soft hats rather than full helmets and shields.

Its members have received training on how to persuade those who are unwilling to follow instructions, reports RTE.
