Housing is one of the biggest issues facing young people, new study finds

According to recent data from the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) and Ipsos, housing and the cost of living are the top issues for young people in Ireland, reports RTE.

The study examined the issues that 18 to 29-year-olds face, such as trouble finding housing, financial burden, and poor mental health.

According to the data, over half of young people who make mortgage or rental payments report that their expenses have increased over the previous year, and over half are unhappy with their present living conditions.

Half of those between the ages of 18 and 29 had poor mental health, and more than one in five have skipped meals because of financial difficulties, according to the study, reports RTE.

Women were less satisfied with their income and working circumstances, had worse emotional and financial wellness, were having more difficulty keeping up with living expenses, and were more inclined to believe that their generation is doing worse than theirs.

The NYCI study makes several recommendations for action, including the use of temporary solutions like rent controls to address housing and accommodation difficulties as well as long-term ones like expanding the availability of social and affordable housing, reports RTE.

The council is advocating the elimination of subminimum wage rates for individuals under the age of twenty-one and the implementation of policies aimed at meeting the needs of young women and closing the gender pay gap.

Additionally, it looks for ways to improve rural public transportation and lower school costs in order to ease the burden of rising living expenses, reports RTE.
