As the well-liked former first lady made an impassioned plea to voters in the incredibly tight US election, Michelle Obama expressed her “genuine fear” that former US President Donald Trump would win the presidency again.
Before the election on November 5, both Mr. Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris were in Michigan looking for holdout votes. Mr. Trump was reverting to his anti-immigrant campaign message, while Ms. Harris was concentrating on abortion rights.
Ms. Harris would be a “extraordinary president of the United States” if elected in ten days, according to the former first lady.
However, she also mentioned a feeling of dissatisfaction and concern that few members of Ms. Harris’s team dared to voice after she lost some momentum, given that polls predicted a near dead heat.
“My hope about Kamala is also accompanied by some genuine fear,” Ms Obama said, ripping into the former president’s record and asking, “Why is this race even close?,” reports RTE.
“I’m a little angry that we are indifferent to his erratic behavior, his obvious mental decline, his history as a convicted felon, a known slum lord, a predator found liable for sexual abuse,” reports RTE.
The vice president’s message that abortion rights and women’s health care in general are on the ballot was emphasised by Ms. Obama, who was there with the Democratic nominee.
Ms. Obama added, “Please do not hand our fates over to the likes of Trump,” adding that he could essentially outlaw abortion on a national level, reports RTE.
Mr. Trump attacked Ms. Harris personally at his speech, accusing her of advocating for a “open border” immigration policy.
He said, “She’s a dope,” “This person cannot be president.”
“She is going to ruin our nation. Everyone is aware of it. She is not respected by anyone. The United States is now under occupation. We’ll repair it because Kamala damaged it, reports RTE.
