The Department of Education have issued a statement this afternoon advising schools to err on the side of caution ahead of the incoming storm Lorenzo.
In an announcement, the Department of Education said schools will remain open unless stated otherwise.
However schools have been given permission to close schools at their own discretion.
In the statement the Department said the safety of children and staff is paramount and any decision to close schools will be made following further weather updates.
The statement comes as the powerful storm is expected to hit the South and West coasts on Thursday.
