The Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn has warned the Government that the country could experience further waves of Covid-19 if restrictions are lifted to quickly.
Speaking before an Oireachtas Committee on Health, Glynn said although good progress has been made over the past few weeks the country still remains at risk.
Glynn said that further waves could occur given that we are dealing with a more transmissible variant of the virus and therefore we must continue to control the virus until widespread vaccination gives us greater protection.
The Deputy Chief Medical Officer did state that further waves could be avoided if the public continue to limit their social contacts over the next six weeks.
He added that the Government must consider taking a cautious approach when it comes to the easing of restrictions.
