PC madness: Simpsons star who voiced Apu and is worth $90 million apologises to every Indian for his role in Indian stereotyping

The Simpsons star Hank Azaria who voiced the Indian character Apu in the long-running animated series has apologised for his part in what has been described as Indian stereotyping.

Azaria announced in January 2020 that he would no longer work for the Simpsons and voice the character he had played since 1990. He spoke on an episode of the Armchair Expert podcast by actors Dax Shepherd and Monica Padman. Moderator Padman is American Indian.

“I really do apologise,” Azaria said. “I know you weren’t asking for that, but it’s important, you know?”

“I apologise for my part in creating that and participating in that,” he continued. “You know, part of me feels like I need to go ’round to every single Indian person in this country and personally apologise. And sometimes I do.”

It must be noted that according to various online sources, Azaria is worth $90 million but only took until 2020 to realise he was in the wrong job all along…
