Derry man pleaded guilty to starving his pet Husky to death

Robert Porter of Ballysillan Drive, Belfast pleaded guilty to a charge of animal cruelty.

A decomposing body of a dead Husky had been found by an animal welfare office at his former address in Maghera, Derry.

The body was found on May 20th, 201 and following a post-mortem examination it was revealed the dog died of severe starvation and dehydration. The dog weighed just 11kg and had been dead for some time.

It was admitted by the accused that the animal had been fed in several weeks.

District judge Alan White stated that photos of the dog, which had been dead four months prior to its discovery were “disgusting” and described the way the dog had died as “shocking”

Porter was ordered to work with the Probation Board on and if he did not the judge would consider a non-custodial sentence and a disqualification order.

Mid Ulster Council stated “The council is committed to safeguarding the welfare of  domestic pets and horses and will investigate complaints throroughly”.

The council also said that this case in question should serve as warning to any person who mistreated their animals.
