Despicable: Dundalk Fireman hospitalised after thugs threw missiles at him while he was fighting a fire

In what locals are describing as “depraved, deplorable and despicable”, an investigation is being launched after a fireman ended up in hospital when he was hit by a missile whilst fighting a fire.

Dundalk Fire Service were called to the scene of a fire at “The Clump” in Marian Park estate at 9pm last night.

They were in the middle of tackling a grassfire blaze when a group of thugs took it upon themselves to shower the firemen with missiles, made up mostly of rocks.

One of the rocks hit the fireman’s helmet, but another caught him right on the shoulder and left the fireman with a suspected broken collar bone or shoulder.

An ambulance was called to the scene and the fireman was rushed to Our Lady Of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda.

No one was available to make a comment to The Liberal from the hospital, but it is understood the fireman was released from the hospital in the small hours of the morning. A patient in the hospital said she was told the fireman needed his shoulder popped back into place from the incident – but this has not be confirmed by hospital staff.

The astonishing incident is said to not be the first time the Dundalk Fire Service came under attack. Allegedly last halloween, they were pelted with missiles, including wood and rocks when they were fighting an out-of-control bonfire in Cox’s Demesne area of north Dundalk.
