Arguably the best known anti-eviction activist in Ireland, Ben Gilroy was given a 3 month jail term in Mountjoy prison on January 16th.
Ben has helped an endless number of people keep their homes from banks and vulture funds.
The sentence was handed down in the High Court for “contempt of court” relating back to community service that Ben said was unjust due to it being in relation to a civil matter.
Ben was released temporarily from prison earlier this month but has again been thrown back into Mount Joy to serve the remainder of his sentence.
There has been uproar on social media over the Navan man’s detainment, but perhaps that’s about to get even stronger now that his wife, Sarah Jane posted on Facebook that her husband is on 24 hour lock down and that he only gets a 6 minute phone call a day.
Ben’s wife posted the below:
“Just been speaking to Ben, he is on 24hr lock down since he went back in. Not allowed out of the cell except to make his 6min call! This is cruel! He is not a DANGER to anyone!! ?”
