Djokovic has his visa cancelled AGAIN as row with Australian authorities threatens to overshadow grand slam tournament

The latest move in the ongoing battle between tennis’ world number 1 Novak Djokovic and Australian authorities has taken yet another turn as it was revealed that the Serb’s visa has been cancelled once again, casting into jeopardy his chance to play in the Australian Open and defend his title.

According to the BBC, the decision was made on “health and good order” grounds and puts Djokovic at risk of deportation and a three-year visa ban.

The tennis superstar, who has won the Australian Open 9 times,  was included in the draw for the tournament and his first match has already been announced.  As the defending champion, he has been seeded number 1.

Speaking about the decision, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that the decision to cancel the champion’s visa had been made on the basis that it was in the public interest to do so.  The move has, however, led to further unrest globally, with the Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic condemning the decision, and posting on Instagram, “Novak, we stand by you.”  He also said:

“If you wanted to ban Novak Djokovic from winning the 10th trophy in Melbourne why didn’t you return him immediately, why didn’t you tell him ‘it’s impossible to obtain a visa’?”

Djokovic is entitled to appeal the decision and is expected to do so.
