Do you believe him? Election date will be in ‘the best interest for Ireland’, says Harris

Whether deciding whether to hold a general election, the Taoiseach has stated that “the best interest for Ireland” is taken into account, reports Breaking News.

Simon Harris stated that he has held a “consistent” opinion on calling the election.

The head of Fine Gael had earlier stated that the government should serve out its “full term” before holding Irish election, reports Breaking News.

Mr. Harris has stated that he will confer with the coalition leaders prior to making any announcements, even though the Taoiseach has the constitutional authority to choose the date of the general election.

He told reporters in Brussels that he wants the government to “complete the work that is underway.”

“When is the right time for Ireland to have a general election? When is the right time for me to ask the people of Ireland to renew my mandate? I’ve been Taoiseach of this country for just over six months, I very much look forward to putting my case to the people and asking the people to give me an opportunity to have a mandate to be Taoiseach for the time ahead. I will want this Government to end well, because this Government works well. We have had more than four-and-a-half years now, we have delivered five budgets, and I will discuss in due course with my colleagues when I believe the right time is,” reports Breaking News.

If the Finance Bill is approved, TĂ¡naiste MicheĂ¡l Martin seemed more receptive to the idea of holding an election before Christmas on Wednesday.

Mr. Martin stated in an interview with the Irish Times Inside Politics podcast that he still believes the government has “work to complete,” reports Breaking News.
